Acclaimed Egyptian painter Mohamed Abla starts a painting competition and prize for the first time in 2014, awarding selected artists a group show at the Cairo Opera House, and one painter EGP 20 thousand. In December, over 100 artists below thirty applied to the competition which accepts works of painting, collage and mixed media. Twenty-two artists were selected to exhibit their work, and Mai Sebai received the first prize. The selection jury was made up of a group of established artists in the local scene such as Abla, Adel El Siwi, Zeinab El Seginy and Esmat Dawastashy, and the exhibition was curated by artist Hany Rashed. The annual award, explains Abla, aims to support the work of early career painters and provide them with due moral and monetary recognition. Abla is also working on having the exhibited works acquired by private collectors.
The following artists took part in the exhibition: Mohamed Elmaghraby, Zienab Adel, Marwa Saad, Esraa Elfeky, Wessam Quraish, Hend Samir, Mohammed El Boghdady, Noha Ali, Marwan Elgamal, Mai Sebai, Fatma Wagdi, Noha Hanafi, Abeer Fawzy, Sara Elsawy, Nada Baraka, Doa Abd Elwahed, Hadeer Mohamed, Abdelwahab Hawam, Esraa Zidan, Sepa Ali, Ahmed Laithey and Ahmed Abd El Fattah.
